Pencil Code User Meeting 2009
24-28 August 2009 Heidelberg - Germany

Arrival Information

Getting to Heidelberg

Most of you coming by air will land in Frankfurt main airport. In this case, there are three ways of getting to Heidelberg. The first one is by train, which usually costs ~20-25 Euro one way. The train does not need reservation, and the ticket can be bought at the airport train station, with cash or credit card.

The second, which I find preferable, is by the Lufthansa shuttle, which takes you directly from the airport to downtown Heidelberg. This shuttle goes once every hour, the schedule can be found here

Notice that this one requires reservation. You also get a small discount if your flight is Lufthansa. The shuttle costs 20 Euro one way, 36 Euro round trip.

There is yet another way, the TSL shuttle. This is more expensive (32 Euro one way), but is a door-to-door service, quite convenient. Notice that it also requires reservation:

For those of you landing in Hahn, there is the Hahn-Heidelberg express, 18 Euro one way, no reservation required

If someone is landing in Stuttgart, then there is only the train option, which is a bit unpractical. You will have to take the S-Bahn from the airport to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (Main station). The ride takes approximately 20 minutes. From Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, take a train to Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof.

Getting to MPIA

The meeting itself happens at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA). The institute is outside (actually, above) Heidelberg, at the summit of the Konigstuhl mountain. The bus 39 takes you every whole hour from Bismarkplatz to Konigstuhl, from 6:00 to 19:00. There is also an extra bus at 8:35. Buses go down from Konigstuhl to Bismarkplatz also hourly, every half-hour (i.e., 6:30-19:30). The rides take 30 minutes, and costs 2.10 Euro. You can buy at Bismarkplatz a Week , Ticketwhich gives you access to the buses the whole week, for ~15 Euro. More information at the MPIA webpage

ps: There are alternative transportation to Konigstuhl, but they are unpractical and/or expensive. A taxi will cost you ~15 euro. There is also the mountain cable car (Bergbahn), which goes every 10 minutes, from (from 9:00 am to 8:20 pm). The ride is beautiful and scenic - meant for tourists), but costs 5 Euro. So, unless you are floating in money, I advise to NOT miss the last morning bus (9:00) before the start of our program (at 9:30).

In case you miss the last bus down from Konigstuhl, there is the Calling Taxi (Ruftaxi), Tel. 06221 302030, which goes in the evening after 8pm. The Ruftaxi does not circulate, so it needs to be called one hour in advance. If you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. We are looking forward to seeing you in Heidelberg.
