Attosecond photoionization dynamics with stimulated core-valence transitions

Abstract : The development of x-ray lasers and XUV sources opens up for quantum coherent control experiments at short wavelength. We have investigated a novel type of pump-probe scheme [1] where an atom is ionized by an isolated attosecond pump pulse in the presence of two coherent short-wavelength probe fields. The probe fields are slightly detuned from a hole transitions in the ion and can be used to slightly alter the final energy of the photoelectron. We show that our scheme allows for characterization of the attosecond pump pulse (by means of spectral shearing interferometry) and we argue that it opens up for attosecond experiments with site specificity through the resonance condition for the hole transition. Finally, we predict the appearance of a "response time" on the attosecond time scale and propose a simple physical model to explain why this quantity is increasing linearly with photoelectron energy.
